Sifaat al-Huroof: The Characteristics That Distinguish Arabic Letters
Two Letters, Same Exit Point — Why Different?
ت and د come from the same place. So do س and ص. The secret is Sifaat — characteristics giving each letter its fingerprint. Knowing where a letter comes from is half the battle; Sifaat tells you how.
What Are Sifaat al-Huroof?
Sifaat (صفات) = characteristics. Makharij tells WHERE; Sifaat tells HOW.
Permanent Sifaat (never leave the letter)
Opposing pairs: Hams (whisper, air flows: ف ح ث ه ش خ س ص ك ت) vs Jahr (voiced). Shiddah (abrupt: أ ج د ق ط ب ك ت) vs Rakhawah (flowing). Isti’la (heavy, tongue rises: خ ص ض غ ط ق ظ) vs Istifal (light). Plus: Qalqalah (echo: ق ط ب ج د), Safeer (whistle: س ص ز).
Temporary Sifaat
Tafkheem/Tarqeeq (heaviness by context — ر ل), Ghunnah (nasalization on ن م).
Why It Matters: Real Examples
ت vs ط: same makhraj; ط heavy + Qalqalah. تَابَ (repented) vs طَابَ (pleasant) — different words!
