Ramadan for Travelers: Fasting on the Go
Travel + Ramadan: Know Your Options! ✈️
Allah gave travelers a concession — you MAY skip fasting while traveling!
The problem: Not knowing the rules — fasting when harmful, or skipping when easy.
The solution: Understand the concession, then decide!
The Ruling
Quran: “Whoever is ill or on a journey — then an equal number of other days” (2:185).
You MAY:
– Fast (if able — it’s better! “Fasting is better for you, if you knew” 2:184)
– Skip (if hard — then Qada later!)
Your choice! (Choose what’s best for your situation!)
What Counts as “Travel”?
Scholars say:
– Distance: ~80 km (48 miles) or more
– Duration: Intention to stay < 15 days (Hanafi) or < 4 days (others)
Examples:
– ✅ Flight to another city (travel!)
– ✅ Road trip (80+ km!)
– ❌ Daily commute (not travel!)
If You Skip: Qada
Make up the missed fasts later!
Before next Ramadan!
Plan: After you return, fast the missed days.
Tips for Fasting While Traveling
If you choose to fast:
1. Suhoor — eat well (you’ll need energy!)
2. Hydrate — especially on flights!
3. Rest — don’t overexert!
4. Pray — shorten (Qasr) if applicable!
Tips for Worship While Traveling
Prayers:
– Qasr (shorten 4 to 2!) — Dhuhr, Asr, Isha
– Jam’ (combine!) — Dhuhr+Asr, Maghrib+Isha
Quran:
– Audio (listen on plane!)
– App (read on phone!)
Dua:
– Traveler’s dua is ANSWERED! (Tirmidhi)
– Make lots of dua!
The Traveler’s Dua (Answered!)
“The dua of the traveler is not rejected” (Tirmidhi).
Use it! Ask for EVERYTHING while traveling!
