Ramadan for the Sick: When to Fast, When Not To

Health First — Allah Doesn’t Burden! 🏥

“Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear” (2:286).

The problem: Fasting when harmful — or skipping when able.

The solution: Know the rulings, consult your doctor!

The Ruling

If fasting harms you or delays recovery:
– DON’T fast (it’s allowed — even recommended to skip!)
– Make up later (when healthy!)

If fasting doesn’t harm:
– DO fast (it’s obligatory!)

Quran: “Whoever is ill or traveling — then an equal number of other days” (2:185).

Types of Illness

Condition Ruling
Temporary (flu, etc.) Skip → Qada later!
Chronic (diabetes, etc.) If can’t fast → Fidya!
Minor (headache, etc.) Fast (if bearable!)
Serious (hospital, etc.) Skip → Qada/Fidya!

Consult your doctor AND a scholar!

Qada (Making Up)

When healthy: Fast the missed days!

Before next Ramadan (deadline!).

Plan: Winter (short days!) or Mon/Thu!

Fidya (For Chronic)

If you CAN’T fast (permanently):
– Feed 1 poor person per day
– ~$10-15/day (or 1.5 kg food!)

Example: 30 days × $12 = $360

Worship While Sick

Can’t fast? You CAN:
– ✅ Pray (sitting/lying if needed!)
– ✅ Read Quran (translation!)
– ✅ Dhikr (Tasbih!)
– ✅ Dua (abundant!)
– ✅ Charity (give!)

Sickness doesn’t stop worship — just adjusts it!

Tips for Fasting While Ill (If Able)

  1. Medication — take at Suhoor/Iftar (adjust timing!)
  2. Hydrate — extra water!
  3. Rest — don’t overexert!
  4. Monitor — stop if worsens!
