Ramadan Day 6: Taraweeh — The Night Prayer
Day 6: Don’t Miss Taraweeh! 🌙
“Whoever prays Qiyam in Ramadan with faith and hope, his past sins are forgiven” (Bukhari).
The problem: Skipping Taraweeh from laziness or “it’s too long.”
The solution: Understand the reward — then you won’t miss it!
8 or 20? (The Answer)
Both are valid!
– 8 rak’ahs — the Prophet’s ﷺ practice (Bukhari)
– 20 rak’ahs — Umar’s congregation (and most masjids)
The Prophet ﷺ prayed 8 + 3 Witr (11 total).
Umar established 20 + 3 Witr (23 total) for congregation.
Your choice: Pray what your masjid does, or 8 at home. Don’t skip!
How to Pray Taraweeh
Format:
1. 2 rak’ahs at a time (with Salam after each 2)
2. Rest briefly after every 4 (that’s “Taraweeh” — resting!)
3. Complete 8 or 20
4. End with Witr (3 rak’ahs)
At home: Pray 8 (2×2×2×2) + 3 Witr = 11 total. Takes 30-45 min!
Virtues
- Sins forgiven — past sins wiped! (Bukhari)
- Qiyam al-Layl — night prayer reward
- Quran — you hear the full Quran (in masjid)!
- Community — brotherhood!
Tips for Consistency
- Go early — get a good spot, pray calmly
- Don’t overeat at Iftar (you’ll be sleepy!)
- Bring water — stay hydrated
- Focus — it’s worship, not social time
- At home — if you can’t go to masjid, pray at home!
For Women
At masjid: Permissible and rewarding!
At home: Also excellent — “A woman’s prayer at home is better” (but Jumu’ah/Taraweeh in congregation has community benefit!).
Choice is yours — both are good!
